When we see evil

Psalm 52

Why boast about evil, you hero!
God’s faithful love is constant. (Psalm 52:1)

Those words sounded discordant, somehow. How do they fit together?

I suppose it could be a warning to Doeg, whose words to Saul led to 85 priests and their families being butchered (1 Samuel 22:18-19). A warning that God’s faithful love toward his people is constant and will see justice done.

But maybe in an evil world, David was simply reminding himself, “God’s faithful love is constant.”

That can be easy to forget sometimes.

And when we forget, our faith can start to shake in the face of the evil we see.

But David said,

But I am like a flourishing olive tree
in the house of God;
I trust in God’s faithful love forever and ever.

I will praise you forever for what you have done.
In the presence of your faithful people,
I will put my hope in your name, for it is good. (Psalm 52:8-9)

Choosing to trust God.

Choosing to praise him.

Choosing to hope in him.

That’s what I choose to do.
