Mercy-givers

James 2

Speak and act as those who are to be judged by the law of freedom. For judgment is without mercy to the one who has not shown mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment. (James 2:12-13)

Those words always tend to strike me, but did so even more this morning.

I suppose every church has “difficult people.”

I know my church does.

And as I read this verse, God reminded me that my attitude towards one of them wasn’t great yesterday.

One day I will stand before Christ and be judged.

But I will be judged by the law that sets me free.

As Paul said, the law of the Spirit of life has set me free from the law of sin and death. I’m no longer under a law in which I’m condemned for all my sins and failures. Through the blood of Christ, my sin has been paid for and I have been acquitted. (Romans 8:2)

That’s the law I will be judged by.

And so God was telling me, “Since that is how you will be judged, have that same gracious and merciful attitude even toward that difficult person. As you have been set free, look to set him free.”

Spirit of life, forgive my attitude yesterday. As you have given me life, help me to give others life.
