Bearing others’ burdens

Brothers and sisters, if someone is overtaken in any wrongdoing, you who are spiritual, restore such a person with a gentle spirit, watching out for yourselves so that you also won’t be tempted.

Carry one another’s burdens; in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. (Galatians 6:1-2)

As I read those words today, Jesus’ words in Matthew 11 came to me.

Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)

Paul is calling us to be like our Lord with those who are burdened and broken by their sin.

Yet honestly, far too often, my first reaction can be like the Pharisees, full of self-righteousness and judgment.

I don’t want to be that way. Like my Lord, I want to reach out to people and invite them to lay down their burden of sin and enter the Kingdom.

Pictures coloured with your pain
Images of silent shame
All the things you thought you had to hide
Broken memories you’ve locked inside

Oh, lay it down
Come lay it down
Come to the kingdom — Mark Gersmehl
