Being faithful love and truth

But speaking the truth in love, let us grow in every way into him who is the head—Christ. (Ephesians 4:15)

It struck me today that as much as Jesus is faithful love and truth, we are called to be the same. We are called to abound in God’s faithful love and truth, in grace and truth.

Just as God is gracious and compassionate, and slow to anger, we are to be the same. (Psalm 103:8, Ephesians 4:2, 29-32)

Just as God does not keep his anger forever, neither should we. (Psalm 103:9, Ephesians 4:26)

Just as God forgives us, so we should forgive others. (Psalm 103:3, 10, Ephesians 4:32)

Just as God is faithful to his word, utterly truthful in all his dealings, we are to be the same. (Exodus 34:7, Ephesians 4:15, 24-26, 28)

In short,

put on the new self, the one created according to God’s likeness in righteousness and purity of the truth. (Ephesians 4:24)

Lord, you are so beautiful. May I be like you. May I become faithful love and truth.

Faithful love and truth (revisited)

In him we have boldness and confident access through faith in him. (Ephesians 3:12)

I was thinking this morning, “Why can I have boldness and confident access to God?”

Not because I’m so faithful, because I’m not.

I’m so unfaithful, my love for him so imperfect.

Why then?

Because he himself is faithful love and truth.

His is an unchanging, never-let-you-go covenant love, higher than the highest heavens, deeper than the deepest oceans, more expansive than the entire universe.

And he is truth, always faithful to his promises. Because of that, I don’t have to worry that he’ll suddenly change his mind concerning me and cast me aside, no matter how much I may fail.

Faithful love and truth.

How can it be?

Ironically, it’s enough to make me tremble.
