Our Father’s heart

We have spoken openly to you, Corinthians; our heart has been opened wide. We are not withholding our affection from you, but you are withholding yours from us.

I speak as to my children; as a proper response, open your heart to us. (2 Corinthians 6:11-13)

I was thinking this morning about how Paul’s heart toward the Corinthians reflects our Father’s heart toward us.

God speaks openly to us, heart opened wide, never withholding his affection from us.

And with great love, he urges us, “Open your heart to me.”

Father, I open my heart to you today, withholding nothing from you.

Opening our hearts up to God

Depending on how you look at it, Psalm 139 can either be very comforting or very frightening.

After all, in this psalm, we see a God who knows every little detail about us. Who knows everything we think, say, and do.

If we have the image of a God who loves and cares deeply for us, that can be very comforting.

But if we have the image of a God who is stalking us for reasons unknown (but probably not for anything good), that’s very scary.

Throughout this psalm, though, it’s very clear how David saw God. He was fully confident in the love God had for him.

And because of that, he fully opened up his heart to the searching eyes of God. Not because he was confident in his own goodness. But because he was confident in God’s.

With that confidence, he could pray,

Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my concerns.

See if there is any offensive way in me;
lead me in the everlasting way. (Psalm 139:23-24)
