Because of this, it is by faith, in order that it may be according to grace, so that the promise may be secure to all the descendants, not only to those of the law, but also to those of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all. (Romans 4:16, LEB)
Secure.
That word struck me this morning.
I am so glad that God’s promise to me is not based on my “performance.”
My performance is shaky. I often fall short.
If God’s promise to me were based on my performance, that promise would be anything but secure.
But God’s promise is not based on my performance.
It’s based on his incredible grace toward me.
It’s based on his unchanging character.
Reading that word “secure” reminded me of another verse which basically says the exact same thing.
Because God wanted to show his unchangeable purpose even more clearly to the heirs of the promise, he guaranteed it with an oath, so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to seize the hope set before us.
We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. (Hebrews 6:19)
“Seize hope.”
That’s what Abraham did.
And that hope was an anchor for his soul, firm and secure.
Because God is true even when we are not.
And so like Abraham, I choose to seize hope.
Jesus is my hope. He is my anchor. He is faithful and true, constantly going before the Father to intercede for me for all the times I’m unfaithful and untrue. (Hebrews 6:19-20)
Because of him, all God’s promises to me are secure.
And I am secure in him.
